Birthday cakes are usually on top, placed winged beetle with great care, a number of candles winged

The first year of moles of chemistry! Yes, you read that right. Just Friday is the first birthday of this blog! A blog born with thrilled winged beetle and is eager to continue growing winged beetle science reporting back where networks connect people with others. Ah! Of course! This blog is well nourished with your comments and your visits, with links that mention him through the various social networks and each pair of eyes to read their lines anywhere in the world.
Birthday cakes are usually on top, placed winged beetle with great care, a number of candles winged beetle lit with a flame on top must blow the birthday prior to sink your teeth into. But ... What is happening in these candles c oronan the cake? Nothing more and nothing less than burning! winged beetle
Take, for example, the combustion of a typical hydrocarbon such as butane, often used as fuel in orange winged beetle cylinders that allow us to taste foods rich Grandma:
1. As can be seen, the chemical reaction between the hydrocarbon and oxygen can be obtained as reaction products of carbon dioxide and water. Fuel containing other atoms such as nitrogen or sulfur, in turn generate their corresponding oxides in combustion.
2. Oxides? Anda! Observe carefully. Oxidation winged beetle numbers winged beetle of reagents have changed! The carbon number has increased while the oxygen winged beetle oxidation has reduced. Therefore, we can say that the combustions are redox reactions in which the oxidant winged beetle is the oxidant (oxygen), which is reduced, and the gear is fuel, which is oxidized by oxygen.
3. Now let's get situation. What happens when we light candles? That if we do not take the fast finger burns us! Combustions are a type of reactions which release energy always occurs: are always exothermic and therefore enthalpy of reaction is negative (.DELTA.H C <0). Thus, we can say that the reactants have more energy products. This difference in energy is released during combustion. Specifically, the standard enthalpy of combustion for butane is -2879.2 kJ / mol (ΔHº C = -2879.2 kJ / mol). This means that one mole of butane, about 58 grams, 2879.2 kJ released when burned under standard conditions: temperature of 0 C (273.15 K) and pressure May 10 Pascals.
4. Note the center of the stoichiometric combustion equation. The arrow direction is the reaction to the right, towards the products. Combustions are irreversible reactions. The reagents react with each other to yield a product winged beetle which can not be converted back to these reagents by this route.

Remember winged beetle a very important combustion: combustion cell! Within us uce CO 2 and H 2 O are prod from atmospheric oxygen and glucose. Cellular respiration can get energy from nutrients we eat, being degraded to release the energy contained and can be well used by us. Seen in a general way we can say that is summarized in the following equation:
Note: What happens in a candle is this: the thread we see, the wick is impregnated with wax, usually a paraffin. winged beetle When the candle is lit with a lighter or match is achieved melt the nearest wax. This wax, paraffin and melted, reaches the end of the wick by capillarity vaporizes due to the temperature therein reached. That steam contact with atmospheric oxygen, is produced by combustion in a candle.

Thank you for the congratulations! The truth that was a first year of "moles chemistry" very interesting, in which I learned a lot and I was able to make contact with many people. As you say, I think it important to disseminate science in many different ways. It is essential winged beetle that the whole society is aware of the importance of science winged beetle in general and chemistry in particular.
