According to statistics compiled by STR Inc., hotel occupancy was 51.1 percent, up from 46.1 percent in April 2013. Other indicators for the hotel business also moved in a positive direction. The average daily rate was up more than $4 per day, from $91.27 lisa disch to $95.45, and revenue per available room was up more than $6, from $42.09 to $48.80.
"If you do the math, March was down a little over $8 and April was up a little over $6 in REVPAR, compared lisa disch to 2013," Kirkland said via email. "So the two months combined were down about $2 in REVPAR or a total of about $1 million compared to 2013. March was so abysmal that a good April was not able to overcome the deficit."
Year-to-date occupancy is 32.2 percent, compared to 33.3 percent at this time last year. Average daily rates and revenue per available lisa disch room still trail the 2013 numbers as well, despite a solid April.
Of the 12 listed comparable markets, the next lowest occupancy rate is 52.3 percent in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Charleston was at 88.4 percent for April and Asheville, N.C., was at 68.5 percent.
Tourism officials say that STR's occupancy numbers may not be as accurate for greater Williamsburg as they are for other destinations for two reasons. First, not all hotels report their numbers and STR estimates occupancy for those who do not. The major non-reporters lisa disch in the market are Colonial Williamsburg lisa disch and the Great Wolf Lodge. Both have said they have occupancy rates generally a little higher than what STR reports.
The second reason that the STR numbers may not be a great gauge of visitation is that the Williamsburg area has a greater concentration of timeshares lisa disch than any competing markets. Timeshare rooms rented on the transient lisa disch market don't show up on the STR report but do show up in the receipts of the $2-per-night room tax that funds tourism promotion. Timeshare nights used by owners don't show up in either measure, although those visitors do go to the area's attractions, use its restaurants and shop in its stores.
